James Grace at Frome Union Workhouse (1846-1922): age 66, 1 song 'O then O then' (FT2173) on 14 Apr 1909: James Grace was a shepherd who was born and brought up over the border nr Warminster in Wiltshire. He was baptised at Sutton Veny on 13/9/1846, son of Alfred Grace, dairyman and his wife Elizabeth. He married Elizabeth Porter at Heytesbury church on 8/7/1874 and they had 8 children.

The family crossed into Somerset in 1896 to live in the village of Mells, 3 miles west of Frome. They were there in the 1901 census, James as a ‘shepherd’ (ref RG13/2311 f115 p10). James and Elizabeth were still at Mells in the 1911 census with 2 unmarried teenage sons. He must have been temporarily admitted to Frome workhouse when Sharp met him. James Grace died Oct qr 1922 (Frome 5c 479).
