Bradley, John (of Shipston)

Singer

Collection date: Apr 1911

Area: Warwickshire

John Bradley at Shipston workhouse:  age 59, 12 songs over 3 visits commencing 13 April 1911: John Bradley was clearly a good singer of traditional songs incl ‘The Outlandish Knight’, ‘The Unquiet Grave’, ‘Still Growing’ etc. But there’s an odd song or two (e.g. ‘The Knickerbocker Line’ FT2620 Roud 2149, which Sharp collected nowhere else):

John Bradley was baptised at Halford, 4 miles N of Shipston-on-Stour, on 8/8/1852, 5th of 10 children of Charles Bradley, agricultural labourer and his wife Mary. John never married and cannot at the moment be found in the censuses of 1881, 1891 and 1901. He is, however, listed in the Shipston-on-Stour workhouse returns in the 1911 census (RG14/18865 p3) as a former agricultural labourer. He died in July qr 1923 aged 71 (6d 670).
