Charles Porter of Bleadon (1868-1946): age 39, 1 song ‘The Trooper’ (FT1773) on 7 Aug 1908: Sharp’s field notes show that Charles Porter was actually from Uphill, a small village one mile to the north of Bleadon – Uphill railway station (opened 1871) was half-way between the two villages.

Charles Edwin Porter was born on 19/7/1868 in Weston-super-Mare and baptised there on 27/9/1868, son of John Porter, mason and his wife Margaret. He married Mary Ann Price, daughter of Thomas Price, shoemaker, at Uphill church on 3/11/1890. They had 4 children. In 1901 census (RG13/2323 f88 p3) Charles was a ‘stonemason’ and gave his age as 32, which would (in his mind) make him 39 when he met Sharp. Charles was listed as a ‘bricklayer incapacitated’, living with his son in the 1939 register. Charles died 1/5/1946 in Weston-super-Mare.
