Bartholomew (Bartle) Dodding of Wyresdale dance: Sharp watched the 3-man Wyresdale ‘hopping’ dance at Dolphinholme school on 8 November 1912. Bartholomew Dodding was one of the dancers (see profile of James Winder). Dolphinholme is 6 miles S of Lancaster.

Bartholomew was born on 13/10/1872, 6th of 10 children of John Dodding, farmer of 112 acres, and his wife Ann. In the 1881 census the family was at Old Robins in Over Wyresdale and in both 1891 and 1901 at Ortner House. Bartholomew got married to Lily Brodrick (Kendal 10b 378) in April qr 1905 and they set up home at 27 Corless Cottages, Dolphinholme, near neighbours to James and John Winder. The 1921 census has the couple living at the same address with three children. Bartholomew was a 'roadman'.

Sharp mentioned that Bartholomew learned the dance from his father John (76) ‘who is still alive’. John Dodding was born in 1837 and died in 1921.
