John Matravers at Yeovil Union workhouse (1843-1908): age 65, 1 song 'The Fox' FT1833 on 3 Sept 1908: In most of the records John’s surname is spelled Matraves (no ‘r’). He was baptised at Seavington St Michael on 24/10/1843, son of James Matraves, carpenter and wife Elizabeth. In 1861 John was a carpenter’s apprentice in South Petherton.

He married Mary Ann Hillard at South Petherton church on 25/5/1872. They had at least 2 children. In 1891 they were at nearby Yeabridge village (RG12/1896 f14 p22), where John was still a carpenter and wife Mary was a glover. For some reason John was admitted to Yeovil Union Workhouse and he died there one month after his meeting with Sharp. He was buried at South Petherton church 1/10/1908.
