Joseph Jones at Marylebone workhouse: age 74, 1 sea shanty ‘Farmer’s Curst Wife’ aka ‘Devil and the Plough’ FT1947 on 3 Oct 1908: Sharp noted that Joseph was in the Royal Navy, ‘went through Crimea – afterwards in merchant service.’

By definition, being a sailor, Joseph Jones is very hard to track down in the census records. All that can be said is that he was listed in the 1901 Marylebone workhouse census on p41 as ‘married, 69, gen labourer, born Marylebone’. In the 1911 census he is on p32 ‘married gen labourer, born London St George’s’. No more details are possible at this stage.
