Mrs Achsah Sherring of Marston Magna (1830-1908): age 75, 3 songs on 5 Aug 1905: Mrs Sherring had an unusual christian name Achsah and was the daughter of James Shoemake (Shumack), an agricultural labourer and wife Ann. She was born in Ash, Martock c1830 and was there in both 1841 and 1851 censuses. Her mother and younger sister were both glovers in 1851, while Achsah, 21, was a servant.

Perhaps one day Achsah caught the train to Yeovil to find work and in 1856 married into the shoemaking family of Henry Sherring. The wedding was on 21/12/1856 at Mudford church just 2 miles to north of Yeovil. Henry, his father and older brother were all shoemakers. The couple set up home in Marston Magna, Achsah being listed now as a ‘shoebinder’. They had 3 children. In 1871 they were in Limington, in 1881 in nearby Chilton Cantelo, and back to Marston Magna in 1891. Henry died in 1893 and in 1901 Sharp found Achsah right next door to Elizabeth Parsons in the Almshouses in Marston Magna. Achsah was buried at Marston Magna church 25/4/1908.
