Samuel Crane of Meare (1827-1915): age 80, 3 songs on 15 Jan 1907: Samuel Crane was baptised at Meare church on 4/6/1827, son of Joseph Crane, labourer and his wife Jane of Westhay. He married Margaret Leigh of Burtle on 2/4/1850 at Meare church. Neither could sign their name. They had 6 children and lived the rest of their lives at West Hay Heathway.

Samuel was an agricultural labourer initially but then became a ‘road contractor’ (1891). Margaret died in 1892 but in 1901 Samuel was listed as a ‘general labourer on Parish Roads’, alongside his two bachelor sons Frederick (40) and Henry (36). Samuel died 31/8/1915, leaving £95.
