Elizabeth Smitherd at Tewkesbury, Glos (1846-1910): age 61, 7 songs 10 Jan 1908 + 12 more songs on 10/11 Apr 1908: Sharp recorded Elizabeth’s surname as ‘Smithers’ for the first 7 songs and then amended it to ‘Smitherd’ for the second batch of songs. The latter is correct.

Elizabeth Haynes was born in July qr 1846 in Pamington village nr Ashchurch. She was baptised a few years later on 3/7/1853 at Ashchurch, one of the many daughters of Thomas Haynes, carpenter and his wife Ann. She married widower Joseph Smitherd at St Peter’s Cheltenham on 17/5/1875. Joseph was 50 and Elizabeth 29. He had been a tailor but was a general labourer in 1891 census at Tewkesbury. They did not have children of their own but seem to have looked after a niece and nephew for a time. They moved into Barnes Almshouses, where Joseph died in April 1909 and Elizabeth in January qr 1910 (ref 6a 298).
