William Davis of Porlock Weir (1835-1908): age 76, 3 songs on 7 Sept 1906: William Davis was baptised at Luccombe church on 27/12/1835, son of Robert Davis, labourer and his wife Elizabeth. William married Harriet Jury (age 25) at Dunster church on 3/4/1864, saying he was aged 22. They had 3 daughters and 3 sons, one of whom died aged 5. William was working as a carpenter in both 1881 and 1891 censuses at Porlock Weir. In 1901 he and wife Harriet were still in Porlock Weir (RG13/2261 f53 p20) with their bachelor son Robert, a carter and labourer. Their other son Llewellyn interestingly became a hairdresser in Taunton (1891) and set up his own hairdressing business in Porlock by 1911, having married and produced 12 children. Life is full of surprises! William Davis was buried in Porlock church 30/7/1908.
