Alfred Chard at Chew Magna (1848-1924): age 55, 4 songs (FT1154ff) on 10 Jan 1907: Alfred Moses Chard was baptized at Chew Stoke church on 24/12/1848, son of Moses Chard, shoemaker and his wife Harriet. He married Mary Ann Roynon at St John Bedminster on 29/5/1872 and they had 4 daughters then 2 sons. Alfred worked as a gardener initially at Chew Stoke then (briefly) in Stroud Glos (1881 census). In 1891 he was employed as a groom and coachman for the Rector of Chew Stoke but in 1901 he was recorded as a gardener again at Chew Magna (ref RG13/2330 f53 p3). Upon the death of his first wife, he was remarried in 1905 to Alice Day. Alfred died on 22/4/1924 in Chew Magna.
