James Church of Chewton Mendip (1841-1916?): age 65, 1 song ‘The Keeper’ (FT1057) on 23 Aug 1906: James Church was baptised 18/4/1841 at Binegar church, son of George & Eliza Church. George was an agricultural labourer and James appears to have been an only child. It seems that James had a spell in London working as a footman at 64 Wimpole Street (1861, aged 21). If so, he returned to the west country to marry Sarah Ann Hatcher at St Paul’s Clifton on 28/12/1874. They had 4 children and James settled as a ‘Gardener’ at subsequent censuses at Chewton Mendip. He possibly died June qr 1916 Wells 5c 532.
