John Stevens at Compton Martin (1845-1916): age 55, 4 songs on 26 Aug 1904: According to census calculations, John Stevens was born in 1845 but he was baptized in Chew Stoke church 25/12/1849, son of George & Charlotte Stevens. George was a tailor and in the 1861 census at Chew Stoke his son John, 15, was already training as a tailor. On 7/8/1866 John married Mary Anne Walford at St Philip & St Jacob’s Bristol. His name was spelled with a ‘ph’. In 1871 John was in West Harptree and in 1881 the family were in Sutton Rd, the road leading out of West Harptree northwards to Bishops Sutton.

John had 3 sons – Harry 13, William 10 and James 9. By 1891 all the sons had flown and John and Mary Anne were still in Sutton Rd. Mary Anne died during the 1890s and so John was on his own in 1901, aged 57 widower, tailor. When Sharp met him in 1904, John was 55 and was on his own in the 1911 census too but he’d moved to Compton Martin in the interim. John Stevens probably died March 1916 (5c 714).
