Philip Luke Jr at Grampound (1879-1914): age 34, 1 tune (FT2851) on 13 May 1913: In Sharp’s Folk dance notes vol 3 p116 (CJS2/11/3/116) Philip Luke Snr, aged 82, recalled the Grampound Furry Dance which involved a club meal, procession and then dancing round the town (much like Helston). The town band accompanied the event and as many as 50 couples had been known to take part. The club was wound up ’50 years ago’ and the event dwindled. Mrs Mary Goodman (86) added further information in Sharp’s notes.

Philip Luke Snr was a shoemaker and his son Philip Jr (b1879) was a mason in the 1901 census (RG13/2214 f8 p7). Philip Jr played the furry dance tune to Sharp (FT2851) on a tin whistle. In 1911 census Philip Jr was aged 32, a bullock man on a nearby farm. Sadly he died in Jan qr 1914 aged only 35.
