Mr (Richard?) Gordge of Bridgwater (1841-1915): age 64, 3 songs on 2 Jan 1906: Sharp selected one song ‘Lord Thomas o’Winsberry’ (FT737) in Folk Songs from Somerset vol 5. In Field Notebook Tunes FNW 1906/1 p8 it states that Mr Gordge is 64 years of age. This is most likely to be Richard Gordge, who was listed in the 1901 census as aged 59, a kiln burner, born in Bridgwater and living at Wyldborough Terrace, Bristol Road, Bridgwater (ref RG13/2285 f55 p29).

Richard was probably born Oct 1841 (reg Bridgwater vol 10 p333) and was baptised at Holy Trinity church on 22/9/1844, son of John Gordge, labourer and his wife Rebecca. He married (Sarah) Jane Winter at Holy Trinity on 1/3/1863. They lived at various addresses – Barclay St, Albert St and Fursland Court. Possibly conditions were harsh, as they had 17 children, 12 of whom were not surviving by the 1911 census. Richard probably died Jan 1915 Bridgwater 5c 560.
