Area: Somerset - Taunton District

Mrs Sarah Temlett of West Bagborough (1839-1914): age 67, 2 songs (FT1885,7) on 14 Sept 1908: Although the surname Tremlett (with an ‘r’) was quite common locally and Sharp went along with that, the singer’s name is clearly ‘Temlett’ in 5 different censuses. The only person in the 1901 and 1911 censuses in West Bagborough with the right age/name profile was Mrs Sarah Temlett.

She was baptised Sarah Western at Lydeard St Lawrence church on 10/3/1839, daughter of Thomas Western, labourer and his wife Mary. She went out to domestic service at farmer William Webber in West Bagborough (1861 census, age 22). She married James Temlett, labourer at Lydeard St Lawrence church on 26/7/1864. Neither could sign their name. Sarah had 10 children and James remained an agricultural labourer all his life, always in the West Bagborough censuses. Sarah was buried at West Bagborough on 27/2/1914 aged 75.
