Rev David Melville Ross: was not a singer but a useful intermediary for Sharp. He was born Oct 1861 in West Deeping Lincs, 4th child and eldest son of Rev Charles Ross. David Ross was a scholar at Jesus College Oxford, graduating in 1883. Curate of St Cuthbert Wells 1889-96, vicar of All Saints Langport from 1896. Married Barbara Wade in Langport Aug 1897, 2 sons Hugh (b1899) and David (b1900). The vicarage in North Street Langport had 20 rooms. He had 3 servants in 1901 - a governess and 2 servants in 1911 census but was remembered as ‘one of the old parsons, used to come down to the bottom end of Langport, visiting especially if you were ill’ (David Bland box 6 folder 3). Ross wrote ‘Langport and its church’ in 1911.
