Samuel Horler of Ubley (1849-1913): age 56, 1 song 'Barley Straw' (FT682) on 21 Dec 1905: Samuel was born in 1849 at Nempnett Thrubwell, 5 miles NW of East Harptree. He was the son of Robert & Ann Horler. He is perhaps a distant relation of singer Benjamin Horler - Benjamin’s family were all thatchers but Samuel’s were agricultural labourers.

Samuel married Selina Davey at Burnham church 28/3/1871 and a son Walter was born there in May 1872. But Selina died on 7/12/1873 in Ubley (a village just west of Harptree) and Samuel possibly called on his parents for help with the infant (both parents were living with him in 1881). He seems to have been an enterprising man because he was listed as a ‘bus proprietor’ in 1881 and had remarried Sarah Ann Lintern on 30/10/1877. In 1891 Samuel was the postmaster in Ubley in both 1891 and 1901 (ref RG13/2329 f13 p1). Samuel died in Ubley 28/5/1913.
