Daniel Shirley of Noke morris: age 76 Noke is 7 miles NE of Oxford. Daniel sang the ‘Dilly Song’ (FT2188) to Sharp on 27 Apr 1909 and, with James Somerton, went through several dances of the defunct Noke morris side. Sharp was not able to recover the dances and did not write the Noke material into his Folk Dance Notes when he began them in the summer of 1909.

Daniel Shirley was born in the hamlet of Fencott, nr Charlton-on-Otmoor in 1833, second son of William Shirley, agricultural labourer and his wife Elizabeth. The family moved 5 miles S to Noke by 1841 census. Daniel married Fanny Tipping on 15/10/1855 at Noke and they had 7 daughters then 1 son. Daniel was an agricultural labourer all his working life in Noke. He died in January qr 1917 (Bicester reg 3a 1582) aged 83.
