William Hobbs of Bridgwater (1835-?): age 80, 1 song (tune only) ‘Awake, Awake’ (FT3008) on 11 Jly 1914: William Hobbs was baptised on 7/6/1835 at St Mary’s Bridgwater, son of John Hobbs, shoemaker and his wife Harriet. At his wedding to Maria Mackland on 17/8/1857 at St Mary’s he was listed as a ‘mariner’. William is shown as a ‘pilot’ in 1881 and 1891 censuses. In the Bridgwater Shipping Lists he was recorded as a 'Master mariner' between 1882 and 1887.

In the 1911 census Hobbs was 76, a widower, living at 2 Hawkins Yd, East Quay, Bridgwater (RG14/14284 schedule 224). He said he had had 14 children, of whom only 8 were still alive. A bit sad. It’s not known when he died.
