Somerset - Langport surrounds

Several villages close to Langport contributed singers* – e.g. Drayton, Long Sutton, Muchelney, Curry Rivel, High Ham, Long Load, Stathe and Compton Dundon (total of 11 singers). Somerton (a town 5 miles N of Langport) is included in this section too (8 singers). It had a population of c1,800 in 1901.

*In total there were 5 men and 14 women who contributed 104 songs and their average age was 56. Of the men, 1 each agricultural labourer, Army Sgt, stone quarryman, gas stoker, stone breaker. Of the women, 5 had jobs - field worker, glover, laundress, teacher, dressmaker.
